FrieslandCampina wants to close the factory for daily fresh dairy in Rotterdam and merge production with that in Maasdam. In addition, the company in Leeuwarden wants to close two milk powder towers. According to the company, both steps fit in with the planned transition to a product package with more focus on added value.
Another advantage of the concentration of fresh dairy production in Maasdam is that the CO2 emissions of daily fresh dairy production decrease by 30%. All production sites involved are part of FrieslandCampina Food & Beverage. In Leeuwarden, 55 of the 750 jobs will disappear as a result of the planned adjustments, and 142 jobs will be lost in Rotterdam. On the other hand, 40 new jobs will be created in Maasdam, on top of the existing 267. The adjustments will lead to one-off costs of approximately €45 million, the cooperative dairy group reports in a statement.
Roel van Neerbos, responsible for FrieslandCampina Food & Beverage division: "We are working on a future-proof and more sustainable production network. The transition to a product portfolio with more sustainable products with added value, such as dairy under the 'On the way to PlanetProof' label, is our starting point."
Social plan
The intention is that the two powder towers in Leeuwarden will be closed as of 1 May 2022. The Rotterdam location will close by December 2023 at the latest. The employees and trade unions have been informed and the employee council has been asked for advice. FrieslandCampina applies the social plan and supports the employees involved in finding a new job.
