The high fuel prices are reason for Spanish truckers to leave the truck. Farmers are also making themselves heard for that reason and yesterday (20 March) en masse went to the capital Madrid to take to the streets.
Last week, a large number of truck drivers in Spain stopped working in protest at fuel prices that have risen sharply as a result of the war in Ukraine. This has seriously disrupted various food chains, including the dairy chain.
Fenil, the Spanish trade association of the dairy sector, says that the milk collection has come to a standstill in many places last week. This also brought milk processing (and therefore dairy production) to a halt. According to the trade association, this will probably result in empty shelves in supermarkets in the coming weeks. The fruit and fish chains are also faltering, Spanish media report. The seriousness of the strikes has yet to be determined.
150.000 farmers take to the streets
Spanish farmers are also tired of the high transport prices, as are the sharply increased prices for animal feed and fertilizer. As a result, no fewer than 150.000 farmers gathered in the Spanish capital Madrid yesterday to present their concerns to politicians. They hope that the center-left government in Spain will take measures to compensate.
