FrieslandCampina is the first in Europe to start a large-scale pilot with the means of gaining practical experience with Bovaer on the farm. The drug was officially authorized by the EU in February. Producer DSM claims a reduction in methane emissions from cows by an average of 30%.

FrieslandCampina now wants to test the claims in practice first. Depending on the results, the use of Bovaer will be further scaled up from 2023. By the way, the French Groupe Bel already preceded the Dutch cooperative. This company announced in early February that it will start a pilot with the use of the methane inhibitor in France and Slovakia.

A third less CO2 on the farm
Bovaer's efforts are in line with FrieslandCampina's aim to reduce on-farm CO2 emissions by 2030% by 33. To this end, the dairy cooperative is working on various solutions, such as generating sustainable energy on the farm, using guaranteed deforestation-free soy in animal feed and now also reducing methane emissions from cows through Bovaer.

FrieslandCampina reimburses three quarters of the costs of the drug, DSM one quarter. It costs the members nothing. The farmers in the pilot will also receive compensation for their participation in the trial.

Previous trials with the product at the Dairy Campus in Leeuwarden showed a methane reduction of an average of 30% enteric emissions per kilo of milk. This leads to a reduction of the CO2 footprint by approximately 10%. The product is initially added to the ration by Agrifirm. In addition, there is contact with other feed suppliers about the follow-up.
