For the time being, Italian milk production is unstoppable. Livestock farmers started the year very strongly, with significant pluses in the supply in both January and February.
Italian livestock farmers delivered 1.029.210 tons of milk in February. That is about 20.000 tons more than the 1.009.000 tons in February 2021. A plus of just 2%. The total milk volume produced in January showed an even greater increase. In January of this year, the supply was approximately 83.000 tons higher than last year and amounted to 1.096.860 tons. A plus of more than 8%.
Dairy exports slightly higher, imports fall back
The growing Italian milk lake makes the country less and less dependent on dairy imports. In 2020, the country imported 4,1 million tons of dairy products. Over the past year this has dropped to about 2,4 million tons. Imports of all types of milk fell sharply.
In addition, strong international demand for cheese has resulted in increased export volumes of almost all types of Italian cheese. Although the total export of Italian dairy grew by just 1%, the volume of cheese exported increased significantly. A total of 520.000 tons were sold across national borders, an increase of 50.000 tons, or 10%.
