Spring peak far away in Dutch milk supply

12 April 2022 - Wouter Baan

The Dutch milk supply was again lower in March than in the same month the year before. This continues the trend in national milk production. The contents drop even faster than the volume. Moreover, there is no question of a seasonal increase in production. On the contrary.

Last month, Dutch dairies processed a total of 1.184.805 tons of milk. This is a decrease of 2,5% compared to the same month last year. This makes the decline greater than in February, when the difference with the previous year was 1,5%. This relatively small difference is a result of the extremely cold weather conditions in 2021.

Just like the volume, the fat content also decreased in March: from 4,57% to 4,52%. The volume of fat produced therefore decreases by 3,51% to 53.562 tons.

No seasonal increase visible yet
What is striking is that the daily volume produced moves downward against the seasonal pattern. In March, daily production amounted to 37.061 tons of milk, compared to 38.051 tons in February. The daily volume produced was also higher in January than in March. The daily production volume will probably increase again as the nice spring weather continues and temperatures continue to rise.
