Trade in roughage is fairly quiet, silage maize is in demand

12 April 2022 - Stef Wissink

The roughage trade has been quite calm this week. The start of the growing season and fears about feed availability, which have been pushed to the background, are making the market more calm than a few weeks ago. The demand for good silage maize and brewer's grains remains at the same level.

Traders already spoke about a quiet market course last week and that situation has changed little. The upcoming grass season will ensure a fairly calm demand for silage (young cattle quality) and hay. The demand for straw is also characterized as relatively quiet. The supply of straw is also somewhat larger, both from France and from our own country. Prices remain stable for the time being. The trade has discounted the sharply increased costs for transport in the prices. The indicative price for straw this week is €132,50 per tonne and that of meadow hay at €185 per tonne.

Good silage grass is required, as is good silage maize
The demand for good silage grass and good silage maize remains continuously strong. There are plenty of pits for young cattle, but good pits are not easy to find. Prices remain at a high level. The indicative price for silage maize has even taken a small step up and stands at €80 per tonne. That of silage grass comes to €72,50 per tonne.

Beer spent grain is still in high demand and waiting times remain unchanged. Beer spent grain is being exchanged left and right at the beginning of the grass season, but there are also livestock farmers who include spent grain as an alternative in their rations. It is clear that rations are regularly tinkered with and calculated. The indicative price for spent grains remains stable this week at €3,55 per percent dry matter. The market seems a bit better balanced than a few weeks ago.
