FrieslandCampina invests 1,5 billion in CO2 reduction

14 April 2022 - Klaas van der Horst - 3 comments

FrieslandCampina wants to strongly limit greenhouse gas emissions until 2030 and be climate neutral by 2050. For the period up to approximately 2030, it wants to invest €1,5 billion for this, among other things, through electrification of production processes, further sustainability among the members and also a much more sustainable procurement.

This is all in it FrieslandCampina climate plan. According to the dairy company, the climate plan contains clear objectives and concrete actions, with a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 as a benchmark. A company-wide goal is not mentioned, but goals are set per 'scope', or area of interest. FrieslandCampina uses three of these.

FrieslandCampina applies different reduction targets for each focus area, but not all emissions have yet been identified.

Hein Schumacher, CEO of Royal FrieslandCampina, calls limiting greenhouse gas emissions very important. The Paris Climate Agreement agreed to take global measures to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius and preferably to 1,5 degrees Celsius. FrieslandCampina wants to work towards this last goal.

Climate neutral in 2050
“With our objectives and concrete actions, we have a clear roadmap for the significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and we are on our way to achieving net climate-neutral dairy by 2050. In line with the cooperative nature of FrieslandCampina, we work We work closely with member dairy farmers, customers, suppliers, scientists, NGOs and the government to achieve the climate goals."

Broad choice package for members
In the production of milk on member dairy farms ('scope 3'), the aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33% in 2030 compared to 2015. Lower greenhouse gas emissions on the farm must come from a series of options chosen by and suitable for the member dairy farmers. FrieslandCampina is considering further optimization of agricultural practices, feed (for example with guaranteed deforestation-free soy in animal feed), the use of feed additives that reduce methane emissions, green solar and wind energy from the farm and stable measures.

In dairy production and transport, FrieslandCampina wants to focus strongly on electrification and also on stopping or limiting very energy-intensive processes.

Additional milk must also be lower in CO2
In the supply chain of raw materials and the supply of products (referred to as 'scope 3, other'), such as packaging, purchasing of basic dairy and sugar, the aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% in 2030 compared to 2015. This requires still a considerable effort, because relatively little has been done about this. FrieslandCampina hopes to take the necessary steps here in consultation with suppliers.

Significant additional investment
To make the climate plan a success, a significant additional investment in time, money and resources is required. Until 2030, this amounts to approximately €1,5 billion. FrieslandCampina wants to raise this money through higher product prices, especially of sustainably produced dairy, from government subsidies and through loans from funds. FrieslandCampina says it cannot yet indicate how much will be invested on an annual basis. The investments will not necessarily be the same every year, according to a spokesperson.

FrieslandCampina clearly wants to involve consumers in the climate steps the company is taking.

Reduction already initiated
Between 2015 and 2021, FrieslandCampina has already reduced greenhouse gas emissions within the company ('scope 1 and 2') by 28% through energy-saving measures and the use of green energy. The greenhouse gas emissions of the more than 10.000 dairy farms affiliated with the cooperative fell by 2015% between 2021 and 12,5, partly due to measures in the field of green energy, manure processing and animal feed.
