Trade in roughage fairly quiet, silage maize wanted

19 April 2022 - Stef Wissink

Little has changed in the market mood in the roughage trade. Trading is going reasonably well. The demand for silage maize is the most striking, it remains good and the supply is not large.

Traders note that although trading continues, it is not very busy. The start of the grazing season seems to influence the mood somewhat. Maize for silage in particular remains in demand and after the advance of the recent period, prices are holding up at a high level. Moreover, the range of silage maize is small. Due to the high feed prices and uncertain circumstances, livestock farmers are careful with the available feed. As was the case last week, the indication price for silage maize is €80 per tonne. Good grass silage is also still rarely offered and the indicative prices for this are stable at €72,50 per tonne.

The demand for straw is relatively calm and the supply slightly wider. The indication price for straw drops slightly by €2,50 per tonne to €130 per tonne. It seems that there is still quite a bit more straw available left and right than first thought and the start of the grazing season means that demand is feeling a bit calmer at the moment. Prices for other roughage such as fescue (€145 per ton), meadow meadow (€135 per ton), meadow hay (€185 per ton) and perennial ryegrass (€130 per ton) remain stable.

Some more feed potatoes available
In the meantime, the supply of feed potatoes has been somewhat wider in the past week. Some leftovers are cleared and the processing industry also offers more peels at the end of the season. The indication prices will remain the same for the time being at around €45 per tonne.

The demand for brewer's grains continues to grow reasonably well, but the market looks a bit less heated than a month ago. Left and right, beer spent grains (in the coming period) will disappear from the ration, which has removed the upward pressure on prices. The indication prices for spent grains remain unchanged for the third week in a row at €3,55 per percent dry matter.
