EU puts money into Estonian project of A-ware and Interfood

16 May 2022 - Wouter Baan

The European Investment Bank is investing €29 million in the construction of a dairy factory in Estonia, in which the Dutch dairies A-ware and Interfood are involved. In this they collaborate with the Estonian cooperative Epiim.

In the province of Paide, an existing dairy of this cooperative is being modernized and expanded. The intention is to produce cheese, whey powder and cream here. The supply (about 1.150 tons of milk per day) is organized by Epimm, while A-ware and Interfood account for the lion's share of the sales.

Both companies are united in E-Milk Production, the implementing organization for this project. A-ware and Interfood together hold 25% of the shares. The Estonian dairy cooperative controls the rest. Construction costs for the plant are estimated at €154 million, of which €29 million is provided by the European Investment Bank through a favorable loan.

European Commissioner enthusiastic
The investment in the dairy is seen as an important project for economic development in Estonia. The project also meets the climate ambitions that Brussels is pursuing. Janusz Wojciechowski, European Commissioner for Agriculture, said: "I welcome the agreement between the European Investment Bank and E-Milk Production, as it contributes to the development of a sustainable and animal-friendly food system."
