Dutch baby powder to US to fill shortage

18 May 2022 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

Nestlé is stepping in to make up for the shortage of baby milk powder in the United States. This is done, among other things, from the production location that the Swiss dairy group has in Nunspeet. Baby milk powder is also exported to the United States from Switzerland.

The imported baby milk powder is transported by air to the United States by Nestlé. being in that country major shortages arise because a factory of the American manufacturer Abbott Laboratories has been shut down for months. This after the manufacturer's baby milk powder was linked to a baby death.

Hypo-allergenic milk powder
The export focuses mainly on hypo-allergenic milk powder (without cow's milk), because the shortages in the United States are most acute and this leads to social unrest. From the Netherlands it concerns milk powder of the Gerber brand. The milk powder from Switzerland is from the Alfamin brand.

The US food authorities have meanwhile given Abbott Laboratories the green light again to start milk powder production, but it is expected that it will take months before the shortages are resolved.
