Dairy quotes are rising again across the board

June 3, 2022 - Klaas van der Horst

The visible rebound in a narrow range of dairy commodities last week has broadened to the entire market this week. Prices are going up again almost linearly. Exceptions are mozzarella and whey powder feed.

Among liquid semi-finished products, it was not cream that led the way with price increases this week, but skimmed milk concentrate. This product became so expensive, with a DCA quotation of almost €3.300 per tonne of dry matter, that it is actually too expensive for traders to have it dried. Despite the fact that skimmed milk powder also rose in price again.

On the whey powder market there is also a significant difference between food and feed prices, but there the price difference is perceived as too large and not completely justified.

Compared to whey concentrate, whey powder is anyway well priced. Due to the large cheese production, there is an oversupply of thick whey, which is largely determined by the season. This product sells for around €300 per tonne, while the DCA quotation for whey powder feed amounts to €1.270.

Finally, on the cheese market, prices for Gouda/Edam and Cheddar continue to rise. This is also the case for Emmental. The mozzarella price is lagging behind and even fell slightly last week.

All in all, the quotations remain at a historically high level. They also enable the dairy industry to pay record prices to dairy farmers (based on these spot quotations). Depending on the type of end product, between 61 and 65 cents per kilo of milk can be paid, it is calculated. It should be noted that this is a snapshot, with high prices and small volumes. The long-term average is lower.
