Dutch Carbon Credits is starting a number of projects in which the storage of carbon on grassland is translated into carbon credits using a new method. The aim of these projects is to have both the measurement method and the project description approved, so that large numbers of credits can be generated by Dutch livestock farmers in the short term.
This reports Dutch Carbon Credits (DCC), a startup from Flevoland, in a statement. The company aims to bundle farmers and eventually the credits to sell them to companies that want to voluntarily offset their CO2 emissions. This is done via the so-called carbon credits. "Each credit represents 1 tonne of CO2 that has been captured in the soil. With the proceeds from these carbon credits, the farmer creates an additional revenue model. Buyers of carbon credits compensate with the purchase of (part of) their CO2 footprint," explains DCC director Erikjan van Huet Lindemann explained the system in the statement.
Checking the amount of CO2
The first grassland project proposals will be submitted to the validation organization before the summer. An important part of the carbon credit system is checking the amount of CO2 that is actually stored in the soil, explains Van Huet Lindemann. This check is done by so-called validation organizations. "Dutch Carbon Credits will be the first organization in the Netherlands to work according to the international standard of Verra VCU for the capture of carbon in the soil. Verra applies a very high standard for the reliability of credits. This supports the pricing of the credits on the voluntary market. ."
In order to speed up the production of carbon credits, DCC is starting a number of small-scale projects on grassland, so that the measurement method for carbon in the soil as well as the project description can be approved. Once this is so far, dairy farmers and land users join these projects to generate carbon credits.
