News Milk supply

Dairy farms sprint in May

June 13, 2022 - Klaas van der Horst

The Dutch milk supply is still slightly behind that in 2021, but in May it has caught up compared to the previous months. The backlog in May compared to last year is only 0,8% in kilograms compared to the same month in 2021.

This is apparent from data from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Compared to April, 4,5% more milk went to the processors, a total of more than 1,2 billion kilos.

Calculated in terms of fat content, the backlog in milk supply in May is greater: still 2,2%. So far this year, thinner milk has been milked on average. Last April the fat content in the milk was 4,41%, this year there was an average of 4,34% fat in the milk. That was good for a difference of 1.180 tons of milk fat that was less available in April of this year.

Towards five-year average
With the higher supply in April, it is also moving closer to the five-year average, which is fairly close to the 2021 line. Until now, it seemed as if the milk supply was not really going to pick up this year, despite significantly higher milk prices. In May, this picture is slowly being rectified, perhaps also under the influence of the new grazing season.
