Trade in beef cattle still quite difficult

June 16, 2022 - Stef Wissink

There is still some pressure on the beef trade. After prices rose to record highs, sales of meat increasingly went wrong. However, the market is certainly not in a bad mood.

The purchasing quotations of slaughterhouses have been adjusted downwards in recent weeks. However, there seems to be some stabilization this week. In total, broiler cows lost about €0,30 to €0,40 per kilo slaughtered in value. The hope is that after the most recent price correction, stabilization may occur. It is possible that the luxurious parts of the beef will find a buyer a little easier with the good barbecue weather. In the meat trade, it should be noted that although sales are more difficult due to the high price level, it is certainly not bad. For the time being, therefore, it seems that there is a high-level correction.

Offer in recent weeks measured by demand sufficient
In the meantime, the supply of cattle, measured against the demand from the slaughterhouses, is currently more than sufficient. The disappearance of a number of slaughter days in the past period plays a role in this. Some traders also report that some slaughter bulls from Germany were recently offered to Dutch parties. German livestock farmers recently encountered much larger price corrections and found it difficult to sell all their cattle for slaughter domestically.

In addition, there seems to be a slightly larger supply of beef from abroad at the moment. From Ireland and South America, more beef is coming back to the European mainland, according to the trade.

All in all, insiders hope that the recent price corrections can eventually be passed on to consumers in selling prices, giving beef sales some new impetus. Consumers are confronted with high costs for almost everything and recently could not or did not want to pay the high prices for beef. The correction that has now occurred should restore the balance in the market. A positive factor remains the historically tight supply of slaughter animals. Although the supply has been fairly ample in recent weeks in terms of demand, this does not mean that the supply is also structurally larger at the moment.
