Good grass harvest tempers livestock farmers' appetite for purchasing

June 21, 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

There is quite a lot of demand for good silage, but the supply is limited. Livestock farmers have generally harvested sufficient grass but are cautious about offering it. Fertilizer is expensive and the derogation is in jeopardy. It seems to be the motto among a large group of livestock farmers to accept a somewhat lower grass yield for the second half and, if necessary, start the winter stock a little earlier than sell now. Moderate pits from last season are offered, but there is little demand for them. The DCA Indication Price remains the same as last week at €75 per tonne.

Market by-products and residual products in balance
The market for by- and residual products is fairly well balanced. At the moment, the ration requires few adjustments and this is noticeable in the demand for by-products according to forage traders. Demand is stable and in line with supply. The DCA Indication Price for brewer's grain is €3,55 per percent dry matter. For feed potatoes, the indication price is €50 per tonne.

Buyers are often inquiring about silage maize, but livestock farmers with maize left over are reluctant to do so. As with silage, the mood is: better to be shy than shy. The DCA Indication Price remains at €85 per tonne. The trade in straw and grass seed hay is downright quiet. Regular buyers do what they always do, but otherwise it is mainly waiting for the new harvest. The DCA Indication Prices are the same as last week. Wheat and barley straw stands at €130 per tonne and grass seed hay will do between €130 to €140 per tonne, depending on the variety. New meadow hay has now been harvested, but the trade is not yet in full swing. The DCA Indication Price is €175 per tonne.
