Dairy farmers in Canada will receive a higher milk price from September, after a request was submitted to absorb the sharply increased costs. This has been decided by the Canadian Dairy Commission (a government oversight body).
From September, the milk price will rise by $1,92 per litre, after earlier this year an increase of over Canadian cents had been implemented. Normally, the Canadian milk price is determined once a year, but due to the sharply increased costs, dairy farmers submitted an unusual request for an interim supplement. The CDC has given the green light on this, taking into account that dairy remains affordable for consumers in Canada.
The dairy farmers' request to raise the milk price was met with much criticism from Canadian retail. With the relatively mild hike now in place, the CDC appears to have pushed for a compromise.
