Increasing pressure on the milk powder market in particular

June 24, 2022 - Klaas van der Horst

In a slightly declining dairy market, the pressure on powder prices in particular is increasing. The skimmed milk powder price fell by about 4% this week, the whey powder prices fell between 7 and 10%. Feed prices in particular fell sharply.

The lower prices of whey powder feed are a relief for the animal feed industry and veal farming, but ultimately remain too high for the latter industry in particular, at a level of above € 1.100 per tonne.

In the meantime, there is still good demand for whey powder food.

The price for skimmed milk powder is also under pressure, but perhaps more from the trade than from the industry. Trading companies see the lower prices on the world market and point out that Europe relies too much on the internal market at the current price level and is gradually building up significantly more inventories. However, producers do not yet seem to feel the urge to offer milk powders at really lower prices.

Something similar seems to be happening on the cheese market. There are plenty of extra deliveries from producers, but free trade is quiet. Some downward pressure is also noticeable there. However, the stock build-up seems to be going well for the cheese producers. The price of mozzarella fell the most. Gouda and Edam cheese also sold slightly cheaper. Remarkably, mild Cheddar actually became slightly more expensive.

Butter is the most stable product in solid dairy products in terms of price. The DCA quotation is slightly lower than last week, but the butter price has nevertheless moved within a fairly fixed bandwidth in recent weeks.

On average, the liquid dairy market was the most positive. Apart from skimmed milk concentrate, which remained priced the same, all other products increased in price. Cream even gained almost 2% in price and rose to €8.470 per tonne. This once again widened the distance between this product and butter.
