In Germany, milk supply in May also lags behind previous years. However, the contraction in May was slightly smaller than in April. Figures from the German Statistical Office also show that the number of dairy cattle in the country has again fallen a step.
German livestock farmers delivered 2.825.560 tons of milk to the processing companies in May. In May 2021, 2.876.510 tons of milk were still produced in Germany. This means that the milk supply this year was about 50.000 tons, or 1,7%, below last year's level. In April there was still an annual contraction of 2,7%. This means that the contraction in May is somewhat more modest.
Less dairy cattle kept
In the German cattle census in May, fewer dairy cows were counted this year than in November last year. The number of dairy cattle was 3,8 million. That was 15.400 less than in November, a drop of 0,4%. Compared to May last year, the number of dairy cows decreased by 74.200 head, a decrease of 1,9%. This means that the contraction in milk supply in recent months is in line with the decline in the livestock population.
