Roughage trade has yet to get going

12 July 2022 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The roughage trade is still in a quiet phase. The grain harvest and thus the straw trade have yet to really take off in the Netherlands. Prices remain at a relatively high level and buyers are waiting to see how the market will develop.

Demand for by-products is holding up well. The demand for potato products is greater than the current supply. Some processors are already on hold for the transition afterar the new harvest, which means that there is a little less supply. There are also not many feed potatoes on the market anymore. "And if you can find a few more bins, they are barely suitable for the feed," says a trader.

The DCA Indication price for decent feed potatoes remains the same as last week, €50 per ton. The market for spent grains remains reasonably balanced. With the warm weather, the growth slows down a bit. As a result, the interest may instinctively increase a bit, says a trader. The DCA Indication Price is €3,55 per percent dry matter.

The straw trade is slowly getting under way. In the Netherlands there is some supply of barley straw from the new harvest, but this does not concern large volumes. There is more supply of straw from France and the trade is also picking up, but things are not going through a storm yet. This is largely because there is still quite a lot of straw from the barn on offer. The DCA Indication price for both wheat and barley straw from the barn remains at €130 per tonne. For straw from the new harvest, prices of €115 to €125 per tonne are mentioned.

Corn stays at the price

There is only limited trade in silage maize. Especially the supply of good maize is not enough. Livestock farmers want to wait and see how the maize develops this year before they want to sell any surplus. The DCA Indication price for silage maize remains solid at €85 per tonne delivered to the farmer.

The trade in silage grass is also calm. Silages from the old harvest, with large differences in quality, are offered, but the supply of new silage is not enough. The DCA Indication Price remains at €75 per tonne. For meadow hay, the DCA Indication Price is €175 per tonne. But there is still very little trade in this.

The grass seed harvest has yet to really start, although the first plots have been mowed. This is also reflected in the trade. Here and there a batch comes out of the barn and the rest is mainly waiting for the new harvest. The price remains stable at €130 to €140 per tonne, depending on the variety.
