Consumers had to pay 14% more for dairy products in June than a year earlier. That is the largest price increase for dairy since 2008. Butter rose in price the most (in line with other oils and fats). On average, food prices rose by more than 11%. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) published these figures today (July 13).
Dairy was the strongest price riser after meat. Meat became no less than 16% more expensive. Fish rose 10% in price. Statistics Netherlands also reports that the average consumer spends on average five times as much on meat as on fish. Not a single food dropped in price in June.
Consumers paid 11% more for food in June than in the same month a year earlier. As a result, the price of food has risen faster than the general price of goods and services, which rose by 8,6%. It is remarkable that food prices are rising so sharply. The last time prices rose by more than 10% over a full year was in 1976.
An average consumer spends about 11% of his spending on food. A quarter of this goes to meat and fish, 23% to fruit and vegetables, 21% to bread and grain products and 14% is spent on dairy.
Netherlands around EU average
Consumer prices for food usually follow producer prices with some delay. Often more expensive consumer products are caused by higher costs at the manufacturer. Producer prices in May 2022 were more than 23% higher than a year earlier. However, food prices for consumers will not rise that much. For example, the long distribution chain has a slowing effect on prices and trade and transport margins ensure that price increases will be less extreme.
The price increase of food in the European Union is not yet known, but in May 2022 prices in the Netherlands were around the European average. Prices rose slightly less rapidly in Belgium, and more strongly in Germany. In Eastern Europe in particular, the price increase was higher than in the Netherlands.
