According to the top of FrieslandCampina, it is the politicians' turn to get out of the nitrogen impasse. The dairy cooperative does not want to move and also cuts off all new initiatives with stakeholders. This is evident from a letter sent to members today.
CEO Hein Schumacher and cooperative chairman Sybren Attema are more than tired of the government's rigid attitude. "We are concerned about what is happening in the sector at the moment. We find the approach of the cabinet to reduce nitrogen unrealistic, undesirable and very disappointing," the letter states. The usually politically correct dairy cooperative uses sharp language.
Full focus on nitrogen
It is also striking that FrieslandCampina does not want to start any new initiatives with stakeholders or take up social initiatives this year. This statement may raise questions, but according to a spokesperson, it relates to everything not related to nitrogen. In other words: The focus is fully on combating the nitrogen crisis. This affects not only farmers, but also the dairy group itself. This week it was announced that in the past 12 months no fewer than 284 dairy farmers switched to other processors, via the DMF scheme. A record number† In the meantime, FrieslandCampina has started the search for suppliers in order to anticipate further shrinkage.
Incidentally, the letter will not only appear in the mailbox of the members, but will also be delivered to the doormat later this week. With this, the dairy cooperative probably wants to underline the message.
