Water minister Harbers also joins nitrogen consultations

3 August 2022 - Linda van Eekeres - 3 comments

The farmers' organizations that have accepted (or are still accepting) Johan Remkes' invitation will meet with four cabinet members on Friday. In addition to nitrogen minister Christianne van der Wal, agriculture minister Henk Staghouwer and prime minister Mark Rutte, Mark Harbers, the minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, will also be joining us.

That says a spokesperson for Remkes. The presence of Harbers suggests that the consultation is not only about the announced nitrogen measures, against which the current farmers' protests are aimed, but that it is broader. The invitation from discussion leader Remkes, which twenty farmers' organizations received, also makes it clear that the cabinet wants to discuss 'detailing the tasks for nature, nitrogen, climate, water and the future of Dutch agriculture'. Eleven of the twenty farmers' organizations have promised to come and talk on Friday. Tonight (Wednesday) LTO Nederland has held a preliminary meeting for which the farmers' organizations that have received an invitation letter from Remkes have been asked. It is possible that after tonight some organizations will decide to participate in the consultation on Friday. LTO does not say how many organizations are coming tonight.

Three hour session
On Friday morning there will be a three-hour session with at least eleven organizations. A spokesperson for Johan Remkes, who acts as the moderator, emphasizes that the intention is to have an open conversation. Afterwards it will become clear whether this exploratory meeting will remain or whether there will be a follow-up meeting. The talks with the provinces, nature organizations, banks, feed manufacturers and other stakeholders will take place later this month.

What a devious way to get organizations to the table. A written promise in advance, everything openly negotiable. The cabinet plans are off the table and look again at the possibilities demonstrated with hard measured figures.

Minister Harbers comes up with water quality . NB! Due to the dry years that are behind us, a number of levels have risen according to the reports. It has already been indicated that drought is the main cause! Towards the EU it is protected that livestock farming is the cause. The biggest problem for drinking water is the increase in chemical substances such as Pfas, and medicine residues. See what is possible and act on it.!
