The interest among livestock farmers in growing local concentrates has been increasing for years. The explosively increased concentrate prices have given this a further boost. The acreage of field beans, the Dutch concentrate cultivation par excellence, has grown again. After a favorable growing season, good yields will be harvested this summer.
Ground or crushed field beans are high-quality concentrates, rich in protein and starch: 270 to 320 grams RE, 350 to 400 grams starch and 1.050 to 1.200 VEM/kg dry. nearby, quickly profitable:
In addition to the savings on feed purchases, the cultivation of field beans offers the following advantages:
Field beans are leguminous and bind N from the air; they therefore require a low N fertilization and supply up to 100 kg N to the succeeding crop;
After the field bean harvest (winter field bean from the end of July, summer field bean from mid-August) there is plenty of room for example sowing grass. The grass benefits from the beautiful soil structure and high N-redelivery;
The intensive rooting leaves a very nice soil structure.
A top yield of 8,8 tons of Tundra per hectare was harvested in Voorst (Gelderland).Mixed cultivation of Tundra winter field bean with winter wheat, with a yield of 7,6 tons per hectare. Mixed cultivation provides extra yield security, especially on drier soils, and suppresses weeds.
