Over the past month of August, the Netherlands had to deal with sky-high inflation of 12%. This means that the so-called consumer price index in our country has never been so high since the measurements. The previous inflation record was 11,1% and dates back to January 1975. Food was 13,1% more expensive in August than in the same month last year.
In July, prices were 10,3% higher year on year. The increased prices of energy (electricity, gas and district heating) in particular caused a further rise in inflation, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). CBS calculates with the energy price in new contracts, which means that the representation does not fully reflect reality. In addition to energy, foodstuffs also pushed up inflation. Food was 13,1% more expensive year-on-year in August. In July it was 12,3%. Pasta in particular became more expensive. In addition to food, clothing also became more expensive.
Motor fuels had a somewhat dampening effect on the inflation rate. They were 16,7% more expensive in August, compared to 24,6% in July. According to the European calculation method (HICP), inflation in the Netherlands was 13,6% in August. In the eurozone as a whole, inflation is rising less rapidly than in the Netherlands.
