In August, U.S. dairy farmers produced 8,26 million tons, an increase of 1,7% compared to the same period last year. This is evident from the figures from the American Department of Agriculture (USDA). The growth comes mainly from large dairy states such as California, Idaho and New York.

With this growth, milk production clearly deviates from the stable trend that has been visible so far. There was a slight contraction until June and in July the supply figures were just above the 2021 level. Now American milk production is increasing a notch, although there is a seasonal decline.

Higher milk prices
The increased milk production is due to higher production per cow. This still shows an upward trend. The number of cows is almost the same as last year. The USDA reports 9,43 million registered dairy cows, just 11.000 fewer than last August.

The sharp rise in milk prices in the US is motivating dairy farmers to increase production. The milk price has increased by more than 40% compared to a year ago to more than €50 per 100 kilos. However, there has been a downward trend since July because American cheddar prices are under pressure.
