Rapid Spring Rye after MKS? That is also possible

26 September 2022

When maize is harvested in the form of corn cob silage (MKS), the catch crop must be sown no later than October 31 and not before October 1. The extra plant residues that remain on the land at MKS are very welcome. The organic matter content in the soil normally decreases when growing maize, with MKS it actually improves. That is a very big advantage of harvesting maize in this form.

Adding effective organic matter from crop residues can be compared to applying 20 tons of compost per hectare. As a result, the organic matter content increases by 0,1%, so that the soil retains moisture better and minerals become more available.

It is no problem to sufficiently work in the remaining crop residues if only a serrated disc harrow is used. This can be done – very efficiently – in one pass in combination with the sowing of the Fast Spring Rye. This gives this second crop a chance to develop sufficiently before winter.
