American dairy farmers again produced more milk in September, as measured by production volumes last year. There is a lot more milking, especially in Texas. This is according to figures from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Milk production in the top 24 dairy farming states rose 1,6% to 7,94 million tonnes last month. The increase is due to higher production per cow. Compared to a year earlier, the USDA counted 2.000 fewer cows. Compared to August, the number of cows increased by 19.000 to 8,93 million. The expectation is that the growing milk supply will continue. The USDA has also forecast growth for 2023, fueled by the sharply increased milk prices, which are now on the decline again.
Growth is mainly stimulated by higher supply volumes from large dairy states such as California, Idaho, New York and Texas. In the latter state, production last year was no less than 8,9% higher than the year before. According to American media, dairy farming is shifting to states where land and labor are relatively cheap, including Texas.
