Growth in dairy farms with Beter Leven quality mark

24 October 2022 - Klaas van der Horst

After a difficult start, the number of dairy farmers supplying milk with the Beter Leven quality mark has started to grow. When the quality mark was introduced in April 2019, the quality mark started with seven dairy farms, which have not had an easy time for a while. Since last year, the number of participating companies has grown to 35.

This is reported by the quality mark holder Animal Protection. The growth in the number of participants and the increase in milk sales was mainly due to better sales at Jumbo. The fact that supermarket chain Lidl joined in, by introducing organic cheese with 3 stars Beter Leven, also contributed to this. Animal Protection says it does not know how much milk is produced under the Better Life quality mark. The organization does indicate that the 35 dairy farmers together have almost 3.800 cows. They can produce roughly 30 million kilos of milk per year.

Extra space in the stable
The 3-star Better Life quality mark pays a lot of attention to animal welfare. For example, high demands are placed on the amount of space per animal. This is greater with the 3-star Better Life quality mark than with organic. The animals have more walking and lying space in the stable and more feeding and water places, so that the animals can perform synchronous behavior. There are also additional rules for fire safety. To promote biodiversity, especially aimed at meadow birds, there are specific requirements for, among other things, the amount of herb-rich grassland.
