October milk price reaches record, increase is slowing

11 November 2022 - Klaas van der Horst - 1 reaction

The average bare milk price for the month of October came out at a record €61,04 per 100 kilos. The average meadow milk price, which is closer to the milk price actually received - because the vast majority of livestock farmers have meadow grazing - is still €1,50 per 100 kilos higher. However, the monthly price increase is steadily decreasing.

This is evident from the Boerenbusiness Milk price comparator. The year 2022 was a year with unprecedentedly high milk prices and also with monthly milk price increases. It started relatively quietly, with an average milk price of 32 cents higher in February than in January. Then things went quickly, with the peak month being June, when almost €4 per 100 kilos of milk money was added compared to May. Afterwards, price increases gradually decreased again. Yet so far, some milk money has been added every month. In October an average of 56 cents per 100 kilos.

The slightly higher milk price increase in September was not caused by market effects, but by the winter bonus from Vreugdenhil. Without it there would be a steady downward trend from June onwards.

The average meadow milk price in October was €62,54 per 100 kilos, the maximum milk price was an average of €64,77 per 100 kilos. A few striking things can be learned from the figures. For example, the average (basic) milk price increased by 56% compared to October last year from €39,16 to the aforementioned €61,04 per 100 kilos.

The development of the milk price can also be clearly visualized using the calculated average milk price from DCA Markets.
