Danone calls in DSM to reduce methane

17 January 2023 - Wouter Baan

Danone has set itself the goal of reducing methane emissions by 30% over the next seven years and will work together with Dutch tech giant DSM to achieve this. With this, the French dairy group wants to give shape to the agreements signed by 150 countries last year during the climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

Danone is thinking of measures on the farm and is focusing on barn management. Environmental benefits can also be achieved through manure processing and feed. For the latter, Danone is working with DSM, which has developed feed additives for this, which it says can lead to a methane reduction of up to 40% per cow.

Danone is not leading the dairy sector in reducing methane emissions. In March last year, FrieslandCampina announced a similar ambition and started a trial with a methane inhibitor. The New Zealand dairy cooperative Fonterra is also working with DSM to reduce methane emissions.
