Organic milk price is falling less quickly than conventional milk

14 February 2023 - Klaas van der Horst

For organic dairy farming, the new year also started with falling milk prices, just like in the conventional segment, but with a smaller decrease. The price differences between the streams are therefore increasing again.

From the Boerenbusiness Organic milk price calculator and data from DCA shows that the average organic milk price paid fell by €1,55 per 100 kilos from €69,33 in December 2022 to €67,78 per 100 kilos in January. This includes the milk price of Eko-Holland. The changed standard levels for fat and protein, which have been used since the new year, have also been taken into account. For comparison: the average current milk price of the seven largest Dutch processors fell by €2,46 per 100 kilos, from €61,88 to €59,42 per 100 kilos. Surcharges narrow the gap
This development slowly widened the distance between the conventional and organic milk prices. Compared to the average basic milk price, this distance increased from €7,45 per 100 kilos in December to €8,25 in January. If all surcharges on conventional milk were included, the price difference between organic and conventional would be considerably smaller in some cases, but the fact appears that the prices between the milk flows are increasing again.

Dairy giant Arla continues to steadily pay the highest organic milk price, closely followed by A-ware. The difference in payment between the highest and lowest milk price increased from €4,10 per 100 kilos in December to €4,25 in January.
