Milk powder producer Ausnutria posted a considerably worse result last year than the year before. Profits took a serious hit, while turnover was also under pressure. This is mainly due to China, where fewer babies are being born.
Turnover decreases by almost 10% to €1,054 billion. Net profit plummets by almost 72% to €29,3 million. The result clearly taps into a different vein after years of increasing profit and turnover.
shrinkage in China
As the cause, Ausnutria points to China, the most important sales market, where birth rates are now under pressure after years of increase. This logically depresses the sales figures. Sales of baby milk powder based on cow's milk in particular stagnated. Sales of goat milk powder via the Kabrita brand grew somewhat worldwide. In addition to disappointing sales, Ausnutria had to contend with the aftermath of the corona pandemic, rising inflation and an unfavorable exchange rate on the Chinese market.
Ausnutria also expects headwinds on the Chinese market in the near future. Recovery is not expected until 2025. "Outside of China, we see significant growth in America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia," said director and minority shareholder Bart van der Meer.
Yilic
2022 was a special year for Ausnutria on several fronts. In January, for example, the deal with the Chinese dairy producer Yili which took an interest of 60%. The cooperation with Yili says it is going well. "Yili is also an impressive dairy company by Western standards. Tightly organized with appealing results. In 2023, now that China is open again after the lockdowns, we will further intensify our cooperation and also expand our international position outside China," says Van der Meer . Ausnutria also announced in October last year that it would further intensify its cooperation with goat cheese producer Amalthea, by means of a 50% interest in the Amalthea cheese factory in Rijen in Brabant.
