CBL's choice for 'Beter voor' (Better for) has caused quite a stir

6 April 2023 - Klaas van der Horst - 8 comments

The choice of Dutch supermarkets and foodservice companies for Albert Heijn's Beter voor Natuur & Boer program as the basis for a new top brand has caused quite a stir in quality mark land. The Milieukeur Foundation, owner of the 'On the way to PlanetProof' quality mark, is particularly concerned.

Since Albert Heijn announced at the beginning of March that it wanted to open up the Beter voor Natuur & Boer program to other companies, SMK has issued two press releases and countless other signals with a kind of 'don't forget us' signal.

Apparently SMK is afraid that its semi-government hallmark will lose out in the retail violence. Whether that will be the case is the question. CBL director Marc Jansen indicates that the retail would in any case like 'On the way to PlanetProof' to continue to exist, if only to keep enough competition. Rather two competing strong quality marks than one all-consuming new concept.

But even such a situation must feel disappointing for SMK. With the choice of 'Better for' as the basis for a new top quality mark, it is clear that a system other than that of SMK is preferred by the retail sector. One of the reasons for this, according to Jansen, is that the benefits for the farmer are better and more explicitly guaranteed in the 'Better for' approach.
The fact is that the CBL is not simply adopting Albert Heijn's 'Better for' approach. The approach is taken as the basis for a new top quality mark. The latter will therefore be further geared up to meet the requirements set by the Milieu Centraal organization for such a top quality mark.

Independent foundation
As a result, that hallmark will lose some of the simple and robust charm it now has. It will become a bit more official and formal than it is now, although the supermarkets do not want it to be said that way.
From an organizational point of view, the top quality mark will be in the hands of an independent foundation, with representatives from the retail, farmers, processing and also NGOs, and they all have something to say. Seen in this way, the shadow of SMK hovers above the top quality mark, because there is more 'edge' around the system. Hopefully, the participating farmers will have the certainty that the end result to be achieved will remain more predictable than with 'On the way to PlanetProof'.

What is Confidence Ben? With a populist cabinet, a partisan Council of State, a bunch of followers in the judiciary, a large group of ecologists who lie and cheat…………
They have a problem in South Holland: the cattle moss reed lands around the Nieuwkoop lakes require more N deposition due to annual clippings removal than is maximum, according to KDW. Buy-out of boeen is discontinued. The Database of the Flora-Fauna in the Netherlands is only available to ecologists: all relevant data will be updated to Natura2000 . There are hardly any data established according to scientific protocol that show that nature recovery is insufficient, on the contrary, so we are going to manipulate! The effects of 3 years of drought are now passed on to the NH3 deposition, while the NH3 does not get further than 300-400 meters from the stables! Especially in dry years! After that it is immeasurable! The SECTOR quality mark for Dutch Supers, including AH, is the EU quality mark for safe food and climate-neutral responsible. In this way, the Supers can also purchase products in Europe on the basis of equal cultivation/production conditions! That is very simple, saves thousands of civil servants and illness costs billions and the "less well off" can buy food - SAFE - at the supermarket!

After the N comes Climate Neutral Production!
Here in the Netherlands we chase the farmers away - cabinet and environmental NGOs - and we buy it from abroad because the Supers deliver what the consumer demands. How about the many signals that organic products often have a higher CO2 footprint than the usual safely produced food package in the Netherlands!
That is already a quality mark in itself and simple!

Simplifying certification is a must for the agricultural sector. We are now certified for 5 certifications that overlap by approximately 80%. Costs for this certification are 4700 euros. The better for certificate is paid by Albert Heijn and they also pay a good compensation for the performance that the grower must deliver to obtain the certificate. Reducing the number of certifications is always difficult for organizations that earn their money with this, but that is no reason for the sector not to succeed. An annual check is of course also superfluous. once every 2 years is more than enough. An amalgamation of several certifications would be desirable for the sector, but also for consumers and supermarkets. 3 certificates in the fresh produce would be fine. Standard, top and organic. In addition, if you are top certified, the standard will be canceled and the same applies to organic. Then standard and top expire. You naturally include the grassp certification in every certification, because treating your staff well applies to everyone. Check again once every 1 years.

The quality of the water from the tap is the same for rich and poor, but of course it must have the predicate drinking water and therefore it must be healthy to indeed be able to drink the tap water! I wonder if that is indeed the case. Protecting society against quality problems is a task of the government by having independent bodies that have a monitoring function and can indeed carry them out. It is understandable that there are different protocols for certifying the different production processes, but that does not mean that there should be separate bodies that do that. One of the most important "side effects" of labels is that they often inadvertently improve the quality of what is common through consumer pressure. This is very positive and made easier when all processes are in one place.

Who earns from those certificates? Those entering the yard with a hefty bill and the supermarkets who sell themselves as tasty and doing well to the consumer. Not the farmer who pays the bill.

Hi CM,
Don't have a name? Just to explain, with the better for certification from Albert Heijn, Albert Heijn pays the certification costs and you receive a best compensation on top of the agreed sales price. If these conditions are adopted by all other supermarkets, it will be a major financial boost for the entire agricultural sector. Then your commitment to this certification will be well paid, but it is not always easy to obtain your certification.

My experience with all those certificates is that it seems nice in the very short term, but that later the requirements rise sharply and the fees go down. And there is always a new certificate as a replacement and then the whole circus starts all over again. AH and the rest don't give away gifts, don't be fooled.
