Fonterra's Global Dairy Trade (GDT) platform will start auctioning American milk powder again. It concerns powder from Darigold, the sales organization of the United Dairymen's Association.
The plan is for Darigold's first product to be 'on the clock' at the GDT on June 23. Initially this concerns skimmed milk powder (SMP), but other products could be added at a later date.
Darigold and parent organization United Dairymen's Association have their headquarters in Seattle, the operating area is the northwest of the United States. The annual milk supply currently amounts to more than 4,5 billion kilos. The cooperative has eleven factories, which are supplied from approximately 350 dairy farms.
Darigold wants to grow
Darigold has been exporting dairy for much longer, especially to Mexico. The company is active in thirty foreign markets, but wants to grow further in the coming years, using the GDT platform, among other things.
With a view to future growth, the cooperative has allocated more than €540 million for a new powder and butter factory with an annual processing capacity of 1,3 billion kilos of milk.
This is not the first time that American product has appeared on the GDT platform. In 2019, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), the largest American dairy cooperative, stepped in. However, this was not a success.
In addition to Fonterra's offering, there is currently only a European offering from Arla for sale, and only skimmed milk powder (SMP).
