Milk production in the United States is still showing green figures, but growth is declining. Milk prices are also under pressure.
Figures from the USDA show that milk production in March amounted to 8,59 million tons. This is an increase of 0,6% compared to the same period last year. This means that growth is decreasing somewhat compared to the previous months, when the increase was always more than 1%.
Shrinkage in California
States contributing to the growth are Texas, New York, Michigan and Georgia. In California, by far the largest dairy state in the US, a decline is visible.
The leveling off growth in milk production may be related to the decreased milk prices. Just like in Europe, milk prices have fallen sharply in recent months, to around €43 per 100 kilos.
