The Finnish dairy company Valio has booked more turnover in 2022, but made less profit. The company did pay the members a much higher milk price.
Turnover increased by 15,6% last year from €1.934 million to €2.236 million, mainly due to the sharp rise in dairy prices worldwide. Profits meanwhile fell from €37 million to €26 million.
However, in a cooperative enterprise, profit is less important than the milk price paid to the members. Valio paid a 2022% higher milk price for 36 than for 2021. In monetary terms, the total milk price increased from €42,30 to €52,10 per 100 liters.
Acquisition and sale
Valio's performance last year cannot simply be compared with that of 2021. Last year, Valio took over the food company Heinon Tukku Oy. As a result, turnover increased. On the other hand, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine early last year, Valio sold its companies in Russia, which, among other things, cost sales. At the same time, she had to cope with strong cost increases.
Domestic turnover increased for all developments by €210 million to €1.404 million (+17,6%), cross-border turnover increased by €92 million to €832 million.
More turnover with less milk
Valio achieved higher turnover with a lower milk supply. Last year it fell by 51 million liters to 1.682 million liters. However, milk has not been the only source of income for several years now. Valio also produces dairy alternatives and also invests in the generation of green energy.
