Organization Mobilization for the Environment (MOB) has lodged an objection with the province of Drenthe against the arrival of yoghurt manufacturer Fage in Hoogeveen. The provincial permit would not meet the requirements of the Water Framework Directive.
MOB has this in mind a tweet let them know. It is not immediately clear what MOB's precise objection is. The province's draft permit is available for inspection until May 18 and interested parties can submit objections.
Various media have suggested that the high water consumption and wastewater discharges that the company will make when the installations are put into use could be stumbling points. The waste water from the factory yet to be built on the Riegmeer industrial estate must be sent to a treatment plant a few kilometers away. A pressure pipeline is being constructed for this purpose, but the capacity of the purification plant may not yet be sufficient for the time being.
Fage's factory should produce tens of thousands of tons of Greek yogurt annually for the Northwestern European market.
