Dairy company Solarec, largely owned by Laiterie des Ardennes, will offer product on the GDT platform. This will probably happen from the coming late summer, with skimmed milk powder (SMP) being offered first. Further details are still being worked out.
This was reported by a company spokesperson. Butter, whole milk powder and mozzarella can also be offered at a later stage.
After Arla, Solarec is the second European dairy company to use the GDT platform. For Solarec it is a new, exploratory step, but also an opportunity, the company believes. The GDT platform has a global reach and also provides brand awareness. It therefore gives Solarec an opportunity to prove and strengthen itself. Director Louis Ska: "By joining GDT we are able to obtain credible reference prices for our product on an efficient and reliable platform."
The GDT platform was set up by Fonterra, but is now owned by three parties, each owning a third of the shares. In addition to Fonterra, there are two stock exchanges: the EEX and the NZX. In recent months there have also been some American processors affiliated with the platform. This has made the GDT much less of a New Zealand party, although the offer from New Zealand is still dominant.
Solarec processes 1,55 billion liters of milk annually in factories in Recogne and Baudour. There it produces, among other things, 110.000 tons of milk powder, 50.000 tons of butter and 190 million liters of UHT milk. Mozzarella is also made in the new factory in Baudour. There is a capacity for 32.000 tons of product. In addition to LDA, four other German and French cooperatives are co-owners of Solarec.
