Dairy market asked to switch to summer regime

June 16, 2023 - Klaas van der Horst

The dairy market is slowly getting more and more under the grip of a summer regime. The demand is not very strong, but if nothing strange happens, everything will run smoothly. There is also good demand for liquid dairy, but mainly from Southern Europe. However, no calamities should occur, such as this week with a fire in a factory in Lochem. That messes things up.

Things are also calm on the solid dairy market. There are some positives with the powders, but there are also negatives. The same story goes for the cheese market. Butter prices are going down, but cream still seems to score a plus over the week.

This last development is caused by the fact that a price peak was registered at the end of last week and the beginning of this week and then a decline occurred, just like in the previous week. The price drop at the end of this week might have been more limited if there had been no fire at the FrieslandCampina factory in Lochem.

As a result, a lot of product, especially raw milk and cream, had to find another destination. This caused some disruption, but it would undoubtedly have been greater had the demand for milk, cream and concentrate from southern Europe not been so good. In the background there is also the fact that the peak in milk supply is behind us.

The room quotation may be higher, but the price trend is downwards. This is also the case on the butter market. Butter quotations in the Benelux and Germany are under pressure due to a combination of weak demand and expiring futures contracts. There is also competition from cheap Irish products, among others. According to reports, this product is up to €200 per ton cheaper than home-grown butter.

The fire also hit the spot milk price in our region, while it remained better elsewhere.

Whey powder feed is stable in price, but also seems to be slightly weaker in the market. There is also no strong demand. The animal feed producers are supplied and there is enough competitive supply internationally. The whey powder market also continues to suffer from an oversupply of liquid concentrate.

On the cheese market, Gouda and Edam foil cheese are still on an upward trend despite continued strong production. Mozzarella increases the most in price and gains €50,00 per tonne. Cheddar actually feels a little weaker.
