Grazing for young stock extra requirement in PlanetProof

27 July 2023 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 7 comments

In order to (continue to) comply with the On the way to PlanetProof quality mark, dairy farmers must also graze their young stock from this year onwards. From this year PlanetProof will ensure that young cattle also get ample grazing in the first two years of life. The Grazing Foundation has developed an approach for this.

Most dairy farmers who participate in On the way to PlanetProof already give their young cattle outdoor grazing, but this is not done according to a fixed plan. A good working method teaches the young stock to graze and it contributes to the health and welfare of the animals.

SMK, the organization behind On the way to PlanetProof, has asked Stichting Weidegang to develop a suitable approach. The organization came up with three different grazing schedules that match various dairy farms. These schemes are supported by information material with points of attention and tips for dairy farmers. This has been worked out by a working group of grazing experts, veterinarians and grazing coaches.

The participating dairy farmers of FrieslandCampina and Farmel were informed of the extra requirements before the start of the grazing season.

Sharing knowledge is the power towards the future and puts the sector in a firmer position. With the approach, also give the savings in NH3 emissions and reduction in CH4 emissions and CO2 and the plus for animal welfare!

"Most dairy farmers who participate in On the way to PlanetProof already graze their young stock, but that is not done according to a fixed plan". Or better grazing via a fixed plan! This was really invented by people from behind a desk. The point is that young cattle learn to graze. Whether that goes through a fixed plan or not will be a concern. Then schemes are made that no one understands. This is a worrying development. Where does the involvement of On the way PlanetProef end? It's "On the way" So sometime it should stop.

They don't understand it, and they don't know how to stop.

Totally agree, but if 1 or 2 do it all neatly, then those who play on their leg are the cigar.
Farmers simply cannot be on the same page, and that is understandable. Many farmers depend on e.g. bank, contract or woman-man partnership, and maybe even more so.

in fact, they should put milk from farmers that does not meet any requirements (lowest standard) on the shelf separately. See what that yields, also share the surplus with your cooperative, right?
