The European Milk Board (EMB) wants the European Union to take measures to persuade farmers to produce less milk. According to chairman Kjartan Poulsen, lower production is urgently needed to tackle the crisis on the market. Farmer incomes must increase.
Milk prices are now so bad that livestock farmers are in financial trouble and are in danger of giving up. According to the EMB, this also endangers the maintenance of the countryside and care for biodiversity.
The EMB strongly believes in the effectiveness of production limitation. In the 2016/17 production season, a voluntary production restriction was initiated, which temporarily resulted in much less milk going to the factories and the milk price recovered fairly quickly afterwards.
Since 2015, the EMB has called for a production limit for at least four years. Apart from the time mentioned above, this has never been followed up.
