The roughage market can catch its breath

14 November 2023 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Peace is slowly but surely returning to the roughage trade. Most traders in silage grass and corn do not have much to do this week. By-products remain in high demand, although the weirdness has now disappeared. The regular work continues in hay and straw.

Supply and demand are reasonably balanced across the board in the by-products. That does not mean that everything is equally available. But traders can generally offer an alternative if the availability of a product is tight. Protein products are generally priced somewhat higher than energy products. Beer spent grain remains in high demand, but delivery times remain limited with most suppliers. The DCA Indicative Price remains stable at €4,10 per percent dry matter.

The tail end of the potato harvest is very difficult and you can question what is currently being dug out of the ground. The supply of feed potatoes is therefore increasing. However, the quality of the potatoes that the processors do not want is so poor that they can hardly be fed. They are, so to speak, driven out of the wagon or it is more soil than potatoes that are brought. The DCA Indicative Price for decent feed potatoes remains the same as last week, €50 per tonne.

In hay and straw it is mainly the permanent work that continues. Prices remain unchanged at €135 per tonne for both wheat and barley straw and €190 per tonne for meadow hay. Good grass seed hay is hard to come by. The DCA Indicative Price is €165 per tonne, regardless of variety. Because grass seed hay is difficult to obtain, some traders are noticing increased interest in feed straw. Hammered Spanish straw is well priced, partly due to high transport rates.

little trade
Buyers have made their move in the field of silage maize during the harvest period. It is now the last leftovers from the 2023 harvest that are still being sold. It is still too early in the season for delivery from the pit. The DCA Indicative Price for corn has risen slightly this week to €85 per tonne. It must be noted that there is little trade. This also applies to silage grass. The DCA Indicative Price is €100 per tonne.
