Milk production in the United States was lower in October than in the same period last year. This means that there is once again a downward trend that was briefly interrupted in September. Milk production has also declined slightly in New Zealand.
U.S. dairy farmers in the top 24 dairy states produced 8,1 million tons last month. This is a decrease of 0,4% compared to the same month in 2022. The downward trend was briefly broken in September. There was also a downturn in July and August. The decline is due to a decline in the number of dairy cows in the US, although the milk price has recently started to increase again.
When we zoom in on the major dairy states, it is noticeable that California produces less milk. In Texas, production has actually increased significantly. In Wisconsin, supply has dropped slightly.
New Zealand
New Zealand milked 2,4 million tons in September, a decrease of 0,4% compared to the same month in 2022. Partly due to the weather phenomenon El Niño, the milk supply in New Zealand is less than last year, according to dairy cooperative Fonterra On. However, declining milk production is declining compared to August. The seasonal peak for milk is just around the corner.
