Shifts remain limited on the roughage market

28 November 2023 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

King Winter hands out the first pinpricks during night frost. The forage trade is not yet in winter mode. A lot is still happening with campaign products and due to the wet autumn, quite a bit of straw still has to be delivered.

There is slightly more demand for straw. This is partly due to bulb growers who have had few opportunities to plant this autumn. Therefore, the necessary straw still has to be delivered to some traders at a late stage. But livestock farming is also inquiring about straw. Price differences in straw are large. French straw delivered in the South of the Netherlands or straw from Oldambt delivered in the North of the Netherlands can easily amount to €20 or more. The DCA Indicative Price for both wheat and barley straw this week is €140 per tonne.

There are no major shifts in by-products this week. The supply of potato press fiber is on the large side compared to demand. Overall, it is mainly the protein products that are a bit on the tight side, while there is more air in the energy products. The DCA Indicative Price for spent grain remains stable at €4,10 per percent dry matter. Decent feed potatoes are and remain difficult to obtain. The DCA Indicative Price is €60 per tonne.

Sufficient roughage
Silage maize is rarely traded. The harvest has not long been over and the pits have barely been preserved. A large number of livestock farmers have supplied enough corn and can survive for the time being. The DCA Indicative Price for silage maize remains the same as last week at €85 per tonne. There is also little trade in silage. Regular customers with little roughage of their own do ask, but good grass is difficult to obtain. The fact that the grass grew well, especially in the second half of the season, brings peace of mind. In recent dry years, some livestock farmers were short on roughage and silage was purchased relatively early. There is no such need now. The DCA Indicative Price for silage is €90 per tonne.

Good grass seed hay is quite sought after, partly because hammered Spanish straw is relatively expensive. However, beautiful grass seed hay is not in abundance. It is not uncommon for sellers to still have a few clumps of straw for the grass seed hay and they want to get rid of that straw first. There is no rush to sell grass seed hay. The chance that it will become more expensive is greater than that the price will drop, sellers reason. The DCA Indicative Price for grass seed hay is €170, regardless of variety. In meadow hay, it is mainly the smaller regular customers who are at the market. The DCA Indication Price remains stable at €190 per tonne.
