Much difference in milk money for 2022 and 2023, also between each other

5 December 2023 - Klaas van der Horst

The milk price year 2023 is coming to an end. The milk price of more and more processors is available, although the cooperatives do not yet have a definitive picture of the additional payment. In any case, the average price level is clearly lower than last year, but there are also significant differences.

Arla registers the smallest differences yet. At the Scandinavian cooperative, the advance milk price this year is between €7,03 and €7,29 lower than last year, depending on the milk flow.

Difference €7,00 to €12,00
At A-ware the difference is between €8,35 and €9,07. per 100 kilos. The difference at FrieslandCampina varies between €7,30 and €9,10 per 100 kilos. However, the biggest difference can be found at DOC Cheese (and parent company DMK). This year, DOC will pay an advance that, depending on the milk flow, is €10,68 to €11,97 per 100 kilos lower than last year.

The additional payments have not yet been included in the calculation. As a result, some things may still shift, but it is expected that this will mainly have an effect on the milk prices of Arla and DOC Cheese. FrieslandCampina already said at member meetings last autumn that there will be no additional payment this year. FrieslandCampina paid €2022 per 0,90 kilos in cash in 100.

A-ware wins again, but not with everything
This makes it clear that A-ware once again sets the highest milk price. Not when it comes to the basic milk price, but when it comes to the weighted average milk price and this year so far also the meadow milk price and the maximum price.

Last year, DOC Kaas set a higher meadow milk price than FrieslandCampina and A-ware. That's not possible this year.

Arla and DOC/DMK
The additional payments may still show a number of shifts, but this is not expected to have major consequences. DOC Kaas paid an amount of €2022 per 1,07 kilos in cash for 100. It is expected that this will be a lower amount this year, but we must first wait for the annual figures for a definitive report.
Arla paid the most last year, with a premium of €1,75 per 100 kilos of milk. Another additional payment is expected this year. Arla always strives to pay a few percent of the advance, but the information does not go beyond this.
