Food buyers are not overflowing with enthusiasm

9 January 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Things are moving along a bit on the roughage market. The regular work continues but otherwise it is not really busy. In itself nothing to worry about this time of year.

High costs for the sale of manure, partly due to the accelerated phasing out of the derogation, are not doing any good to the confidence of livestock farmers. Add to that the fact that food remains well priced and buyers are not overflowing with enthusiasm.

The trade in hay and straw continues steadily. It is mainly the regular customers who provide the most work. According to various traders, straw tends to increase somewhat because the supply of good straw is not good everywhere. The DCA Indicative Price nevertheless remains at €140 per tonne for both wheat and barley straw. Meadow hay remains the same at €190 per tonne. Grass seed hay is difficult to obtain and if you, as a forage trader, get your hands on some, it's gone in no time. The DCA Indicative Price is €170, regardless of breed.

Always something
Good silage remains a scarce commodity. There is a demand for grass on which cows produce milk in certain areas. Some traders try something with foil bales, but 'that's something every time' according to some insiders. The DCA Indicative Price for silage remains at a stable, relatively high level of €100 per tonne. It is not busy in silage maize, but information is provided. The DCA Indication Price remains stable at €100 per tonne.

There are also few changes in the by-products this week. Several campaign products are heading towards the end of the season but will still be played this week. Beer spent grains are becoming slightly more available. According to a trader, this was also allowed after a few short weeks, partly due to planned stops around the holidays. The DCA Indicative Price for spent grain is €4,10 per percent dry matter. Feed potatoes are difficult to obtain. The price remains stable at €60 per tonne.
