Belgian MilkBE spends more on sustainability

11 January 2024 - Klaas van der Horst

Trade organization MilkBE is increasing the levy per liter of milk to focus more on making the Belgian dairy sector more sustainable. Additional space for this will also be freed up by lower expenditure on botulism control.

Compared to its counterpart ZuivelNL, MilkBE works with a very modest budget of €607.000. These are the budgeted expenses for 2023. The most important budget items of the organization concern those for the Botulism Solidarity Fund and the Monimilk monitoring program.

Botulism Fund
The Botulism Soldarity Fund helps dairy farmers who have been affected by an outbreak of botulism on their farm with compensation. The fund provides compensation for the destroyed milk and a provision in the event of serious deaths among dairy cows. In recent years, the number of serious botulism cases has been limited, allowing a reserve to be built up. It was therefore decided to sharply reduce collections for the botulism fund in 2024.

However, more money is being allocated for further sustainability, but the total is still a modest amount. The levy for dairy farmers will increase from 6,35 to 6,45 cents per 1.000 liters of milk. For milk buyers, the levy will increase from 7,6 to 8,92 cents per 1.000 liters of milk. Belgian milk production totaled 2022 billion liters in 4,7. No figure is yet known for 2023.
