Cheese and WPC bright spots in weak US dairy exports

25 January 2024 - Klaas van der Horst

American dairy exports for 2023 will be significantly lower than those for 2022, reports dairy export agency USDEC. The organization does not yet have data for the whole of 2023, but is based on the figures up to and including November.

This shows that, calculated in terms of ingredients, 7,4% less product was exported than in the same period of 2022. In November alone, even 8,1% less was exported. The export value fell by 16% over the first eleven months to a total of $7,48 billion

Cheese and whey protein concentrates (WPCs) with 80 or more percent protein were an exception to the rule and were exported more often. Mexico remains the main buyer for cheese, but more sales were also made to Central America and China. To the latter country even five times as much as in the previous year. However, the export growth for Mexico of more than 40% is much heavier.

Total exports of higher WPCs increased by 18% last year through November. Japan remained the main sales market, although fewer sales were made there than in 2022. Additional sales to China, Brazil and India, among others, more than made up for this. On the other hand, the export of other dairy products, such as milk powders and whey powders with a lower protein content, fell sharply.
