Eko-Holland increases slightly in stable market

4 March 2024 - Klaas van der Horst

Organic supplier cooperative Eko-Holland gives a small plus to the advance price for March, because there is room, says chairman René Cruijsen. For the rest, he sees a fairly stable market for organic dairy.

The price increase to €60,55 per 100 kilos excluding VAT follows two reductions. According to Cruijsen, these reductions and now the increase are the result of seeking a new balance in the new year. "At the beginning of the year it is always a bit difficult to immediately find the right direction. I think we have it now. The market is stable with a positive undertone."

Eko-Holland is the market leader in organic milk in the Netherlands, with FrieslandCampina as a close second. Rouveen Cheese Specialties is also a major player in this market. Arla has large organic sales, but obtains most of its milk from Eko-Holland for the Dutch market. Cruijsen: "These major players are strengthening their position, but we see the other parties sinking slightly."

The chairman of Eko-Holland remains optimistic about the position of organic dairy, but sees the number of entrants in dairy farming increasing rapidly. "We currently receive about two to three registrations per week from switchers and also switchers."

According to him, this number has grown due to increased government subsidies for organic products. Cruijsen does not want to say that there are too many registrations or that government subsidies are disrupting the organic market, but too many subsidies are a danger to the market. Eko-Holland is also looking for sales for its milk across the border. According to Cruijsen, the demand is there.

Eko-Holland is increasing the biodynamic milk price for March to €65,55 per 100 kilos.
