A cheese from Royal A-ware has been selected as the second best cheese in the world at the biennial cheese inspection in Madison, Wisconsin. It concerns an old Gouda cheese (more than 10 months, Artikaas Vintage Lot-18) from US sales subsidiary Dutch Cheese Makers.
First place went to a mature Swiss cheese. A-ware took home four prizes in total. This did not make it the top scorer among the Dutch. FrieslandCampina and its subsidiary Zijerveld (now Velder) took home thirteen prizes, Henri Willig seven, Cono three and Van der Heiden one.
Dutch cheesemakers traditionally do well at the biennial global cheese inspection in Wisconsin. The prices are also good for sales on the American market. There is a good demand for cheeses in the higher segment.
The other prizes that A-ware took home were twice for a Gouda smoked cheese and for a goat's cheese. The other Dutch entrants also scored well with goat cheeses.
